This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Some say the way to a man's heart is through his stomach. I believe a great way to a child's brain is through his stomach. Food is an all-encompassing educational tool. Following a recipe requires math & language skills: measuring, counting, following directions. They also learn about nutrition.

I have 2 classes of 18 4-year-old's motivated to learn about everything!

Primarily English language learners who qualify for free lunch, my students have loving, supportive families. Despite limited resources, they generously donate food items for our weekly 'cooking' activities. My students enjoy the opportunity to make their own snacks. They are also more willing to try new foods when presented in a fun, hands-on project with their classmates. For math, we taste carrots, cabbage, radishes, & celery & post our preferences on the "Which Bunny Vegetable is Your Favorite?" graph. We incorporate math & language skills when preparing a recipe like Cinnamon Bear Toast while reciting the poem "Fuzzy Wuzzy Was a Bear." We obviously can't do these things every day, so food/nutrition-related games, activities, & literature that reinforce math, language, & science skills are high-interest, major motivators for my students!

My Project

I'm requesting instructional kits that provide dynamic math & language activities via the theme of Nutrition. Our House Center has a plethora of produce, but is lacking in proteins & carbohydrates. We are also in need of new plates, cups, pots, & pans. A balance scale will be a fun way for students to experiment & compare. Food-related literature, math games, & fruit manipulatives will provide a wealth of opportunities for my students to learn through food. I also utilize resources such as Champions for Change, including the Harvest of the Month Newsletter. FEED USA is another useful resource.

My students have limited opportunities to explore & expand their personal menus, yet are at the optimal age to do so.

I will continue our weekly food projects, but would like to supplement them with related activities such as fruit patterning, food group sorting, & literature. A child getting excited about Ants on a Log,(celery with peanut butter & raisins)& actually eating it, is what it's all about!
