Cooking=Communicating. Essential Skills for Students With Autism

My students need kitchen tools and supplies to be able to participate in cooking activities which teach life skills, communication, social skills, and more.

My Students

Our class is comprised of 8 amazing students with autism across three grade levels who learn in many different ways. Our students come from different wards from within DC, not just from the surrounding neighborhood. Our class is a self-contained classroom, which means that the majority of each students' learning takes place within our room. Many of our students also receive some instruction the general education setting and are able to interact and socialize with their typically developing peers throughout the day.

Autism is a developmental disability that affects the way our students interact and communicate with others.

Autism is a spectrum disorder and our students skills and abilities fall all over the range of the spectrum. We have students who are approaching grade level academically as well as students who are not yet communicating verbally. Each of our students is unique and has their own strengths, gifts and support needs. All of our students need support in the areas of communication, behavior, social interaction, and daily living skills.

My Project

Our students need access to the kitchen tools and utensils that would allow them to participate in targeted cooking activities. Cooking and food interests all of my students and gets their attention before we even begin the activity! This allows them to be engaged from the start. The items funded will allow our students to cook a wide range of recipes, all of which are supplemented with specific vocabulary and visuals to support their learning. Students not only learn to create a finished product, but also learn to follow directions, sequence steps, use specific vocabulary, regulate their behavior by waiting and taking turns, experience sensory input, try new foods, make choices and requests, improve fine motor skills, and most importantly, become increasingly independent. Many people with autism have food selectivity and their diets are behaviorally restricted to a handful of foods. Cooking in the classroom has increased the opportunities our students have to try new foods and expand their food repertoire as well.

Your generous donation to our project will improve our kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd grade self-contained autism classroom by building stronger receptive and expressive language, independence, as well as important life and social skills.

This will change our students' lives for the better. They will be having fun while learning and be able to extend the important skills learned outside of the classroom. Learning should be fun; and tasty, too!
