Cooking With the Sun

Help me give my students the materials to create their own solar powered oven during our unit on energy transfer.

My Project

There is a 6th grade next generation science standard that states: Apply scientific principles to design, construct, and test a device that either minimizes or maximizes thermal energy transfer. What better way to complete that standard than to have students design and build and use their own solar oven to demonstrate energy being transferred from the sun to their food. Miniature pizza boxes are the best materials to use (and are the perfect size for s’mores). Students learn best through hands-on experiences and this is an experience that is educational, fun, and rewarding. Students can even re-use their designs and make changes that would allow for more energy transfer.
