Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The materials chosen for my project will be used for an after-school cooking program to help students learn how to make healthy recipes in order to foster healthier eating habits that will last a lifetime. I am an English as a New Language teacher in the South Bronx, a crime-ridden neighborhood that houses a high percentage of low-income, minority, and special needs students. Many of the families in this community suffer from obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and a number of other chronic conditions that could be prevented by educating students on healthier food options and ways to prepare wholesome meals that can promote wellness and health. Some of the students within this community come to school malnourished and are disproportionately at a disadvantage due to a lack of resources such as affordable fresh food availability and knowledge on how their personal food choices can affect their physical and mental health.

By donating to our after-school cooking program students' lives will be enriched by giving them an opportunity to learn about nutrition education such as planning meals, creating healthy recipes, and making smarter food choices.

Not only will students learn an important life skill but this after-school program will keep them engaged and off the streets. This program will increase the chances that students will make healthier foods at home which teaches them responsibility while fostering positive eating habits. Because students will eat the food that they’ve prepared after each session, this will aid team building and promote a sense of community and belonging. Additionally, students may embrace the art of cooking which can cultivate career-driven mindsets and serve as a foundation for creativity in the kitchen.
