Cooking Up Something Special With My Exceptional Students!

My Project

I am the Home Living Skills teacher in a unique, special education school in St. Paul. All of my students have moderate to severe special needs, including Autism, Cognitive Disabilities, and Physical Impairments and many are non-verbal. I see 101 students each week, Kindergarten through 12th grade, giving each child an opportunity to experience food and food preparation with all of their senses.

The items we have requested will help engage my students in learning in one of their favorite classes!

Tools such as a stand mixer and blender can be switch-operated, giving our students with physical limitations the same opportunities as their peers.

My goals for this project are to enhance the kitchen experience for my students with good quality items that will hold up to hundreds of uses each week. Unbreakable bowls, cups, and silverware, accessible appliances, sensory toys and tools, school supplies (such as glue, scissors, and paper for projects), and some hands-on, food-related toys to keep them busy while they patiently wait for their turn to cook. We have also requested some dishwasher pods, because, thank the heavens for a dishwasher! These items will greatly enhance student participation in the cooking room and will save me from using the 5 minutes between each class to hurry and wash the dishes. :-)
