Help me give my students cooking aprons and oven mitts, cookie mix, edible cookie decorations, baby wipes, lollipops, and valentines cards for the ultimate hands on math lab.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Transitional Kindergarteners are curious hands-on learners. They need repetition and lots of practice to master foundational skills like counting and number sense. Hands on activities, like cooking, give them this important practice. Math can often seem daunting, but it doesn’t have to be! Most students are still developing a basic understanding of numbers and how they work. The biggest challenge is that numbers are an abstract concept, but transitional kindergarteners are still concrete thinkers. They need lots of hands-on experiences to help them gain a strong number sense.
Cooking gives students the opportunity to utilize fractions through measurements, apply multiplicative thinking through recipe measurements, apply partitive division application when baking, and calculate time, time left, and more time needed when preparing dishes.
I will laminate cookie mixing directions with the laminating pouches, and then students will put on chef and baker coats, aprons and oven mitts, read directions, measure out ingredients, mix cookies and bake cookies, and then invite their families to the classroom for a cookie decorating day. We will measure out frosting into the 3 ounce containers, and edible decorations in the 2 ounce containers and then students will decorate cookies with families. Student will also make Valentines for families with the Valentines cards, and they will calculate how many heart shaped lollipops each family can get and distribute them on our cookie decorating day.
With your help, students will have lots of opportunities to utilize math to cook up some yummy treats and apply addition, subtraction, division, and multiplication in a real world hands on situation.
