This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Celebrity chef Guy Fieri said, "Cooking with kids is not just about the ingredients, recipes, and cooking. It's about harnessing imagination, empowerment, and creativity." For my students with special needs, cooking also is about independence!
Our classroom is a whirlwind of activity everyday!
As a classroom for students with special needs, we are constantly in motion helping students develop the skills they will need to be successful, independent adults. My students are inner-city Kindergarten-2nd grade students with a variety of mild to moderate special needs. Many of my students have Down Syndrome, some have autism, while others were born very prematurely, or were prenatally exposed to drugs or alcohol. Within my room, we have a variety of academic and health needs, as well as many students who are also learning English. Our classroom is in constant motion as we do as much as we can everyday to help the students begin their journey towards independence as adults!
My Project
For my students with special needs, life skills that will allow them to lead independent lives as adults are crucial. The supplies of this project will allow us constant access to the materials we need to begin working on a fundamental life skill many of us take for granted - cooking! These small appliances and supplies will allow students to practice turn taking, following directions, and even provide vocabulary practice all while they learn to read simple recipes. Building a foundation for my students on how to use simple kitchen appliances and follow easy recipes is a critical component in their lifelong journey.
This project will allow my students to take the first of many steps to independent living!
My ultimate goal as a special education teacher is to help my students acquire all of the skills they will need to be successful adults, and learning to cook is one of these essential skills. These small appliances and supplies will allow hands-on experiences for my students, and are sure to yield delicious results!
