My Students

Our students come from richly diverse economic, language, social, cultural, and academic backgrounds, from all around the south side of Seattle. Some take International Baccalaureate classes. Some receive Special Education services. Some are the first in their families who will graduate from high school. Some balance school with work and childcare.

Amidst this diversity, they are all wonderful, kind, and empathetic young people who challenge themselves to try new things, who value the chance to learn from a rich school community, and who show their learning in different ways.

When faced with the death of George Floyd, our students quickly organized a peaceful march. They advertised on social media and with paper flyers. They chose a location, secured permits, and organized a schedule of speakers including 9th through 12th-grade students from our school.

Now that we are back in person, our students are showing incredible perseverance in the face of daily changes, crowded classrooms, technology issues, and an enduring pandemic that is having a larger effect on our community of learners. They come every day, they engage in learning, and they are eager to build connections with their teachers, staff, and classmates.

My Project

Our students love to cook. The culinary arts teacher and I want to encourage this love because we see how excited our students get when, in class, they cook, eat, and share their food with friends and family. We worked with culinary students to develop a short list of criteria that they want in a cookbook library they can use to practice and improve upon something they love to do!

The books we chose as a group highlight recipes and stories that represent our wonderfully diverse school community.

They also provide recipes with ingredients and tools that most of our students have at home or are easy to get in our community. Lastly, the recipes are an appropriate level of complexity to make sure that our students will be successful when trying out new recipes and honing their skills.

By providing students with the resources to improve upon something they already love to do, these cookbooks will help them connect to their cultures and their histories and better understand the cultures of their peers. These books will also help our students learn to make healthy choices in what and how they eat, an important life skill since highly processed food is cheap and easily accessible in our community.

Thank you for helping ensure that our students continue to live healthy, compassionate, informed lives!
