Cooking up Counseling

My students need "Julia" Cook books and Activity books for classroom and small group lessons.

My Students

Can you imagine meeting the author of some of your favorite books? Our school had Julia Cook come to the school. Her presentation and then meeting with small groups of students really motivated them. Now they are excited to read her books. Her series of books addresses many issues facing students.

Our students are in an area that is increasingly being impacted by the economy.

Most are very hardworking families, working multiple jobs so that they can stand on their own. Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it, and often have to move in with relatives after job loss. We have students that have military parents, some who have recently lost parents in service. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Many of the staff spend hundreds of their own dollars yearly to provide materials for students and motivational rewards. They continually go above and beyond to help their students.

My Project

In the past two years our students have become excited to read any of Julia Cook's book. They feel personally connected to her since she came to our school. Because her books address so many of the areas that impact our students, I started using them for classroom lessons. Our district is currently strengthening our writing program. The activity guides that go along with the books not only have activities that encourage the students to think about the issue, they also include several good writing activities. This has allowed me to coordinate with the classroom teachers and we are able to build units of study around the books, therefore working on reading and writing fundamentals. I am also able to use her books with students in small groups or individual counseling because the books address issues that students struggle with such as divorce and grief.

I want my students to be able to be excited about learning and to be able to address issues that they are struggling with.

When students feel a connection with an author it makes them much more likely to truly engage in the subject. The issues such as bullying, teasing, worrying, grieving, and many more are hard for students to cope with. These materials would really help the students deal with these issues. Thank you for considering this project and for any donations.
