My Project
Most of us have felt the pride and sense of accomplishment derived from creating and sharing good food with the people we care about. Many of our students would benefit from such a boost. In our school, it is impossible to sustain home economics courses. Students must rely on parents, other family members, or friends to teach them how to cook. For special educators, this creates an opportunity to develop an alternative means of satisfying some basic needs that may go unmet otherwise.
Many special needs students struggle with seeing the world through other’s eyes, or understanding that others could experience the world in a way that differs from their own.
Sharing food can open our students’ minds to differing perspectives in a way that traditional learning can not. Acknowledging that one recipe can be delicious to one person and disliked by another can foster a much more nuanced understanding of individuality than examples being read from a text or videos displayed on a wall.
Perhaps the most elusive basic need for students with special needs is a sense of mastery. If you have ever created or done something that has made someone exclaim “That is the best…I have ever…” then you know how good mastery can feel. Teaching students to cook can create an opportunity for them to experience that feeling. For many special needs students, it can feel like school is somewhere they are forced to go; a place to struggle with activities that everyone else seems to get easily. Imagine providing those students the ability to master a skill as vital as providing delicious, life-sustaining, sustenance to their loved ones. I’ll take that over finding the slope of a line any day.
