My students need small cooking appliances to cook with during our cooking lessons. These skills will help foster their independent living skills when preparing meals.
Everyone wants to be able to prepare themselves a meal when they are feeling hungry. Wouldn't it be great if students with special needs could learn how to cook and prepare their own meals?
My students are in a 4th and 5th grade Autism classroom.
They attend a public school with their typically developing peers. We work in a low income neighborhood with little economic support. Currently there are 7 students in the classroom who all enjoying participating in cooking lessons. Within the classroom, we focus on teaching the kids various adaptive daily living skills to help them become independent children/adults.
My Project
With these appliances a refrigerator, a microwave, and a blender we can expand the variety of food meals we can prepare. We can cook foods that can be heated in a microwave and store our ingredients in a refrigerator. We can teach the kids how to make smoothies and healthy shakes using fruits. Currently we are teaching the kids how to make toast using a toaster. Many of the appliances the students can use own their own or with little assistance. It would also help students become more responsible with the cleaning and putting away of these appliances so they will last a long time. The students will now be able to generalize their skills they have been taught such as mixing, measuring, pouring, and preparing food meals, with the use of these new appliances in our kitchen classroom.
Please help us in assisting our students to become more independent children and adults.
These skills will be carried with them throughout their lives. We can improve our cooking class by continuing to make delicious recipes and a range of desired foods that all the students would like. Our classroom would greatly appreciate any and all contributions to further our cooking class
