My Project
It's not just the poorest families experiencing hunger now. This is a difficult time in our country for many people. The recent confluence of events has brought to the forefront, more than ever before, the inequities that we face in our society. The response to COVID-19 has impacted all of us in unprecedented ways. Among the drastic changes that have taken place, school closures have brought many uncertainties and concerns for our community. This pandemic did not affect all Americans equally. The coronavirus has spread through urban areas like the Bronx faster than rural areas and has disproportionately affected African-American and Hispanic communities.
Hunger has increased most for black and brown families.
I know from experience that a hungry child is not a happy child.
Hunger can lead to an inability to focus as well as behavioral outbursts. My students will benefit from food packages as their basic needs will be met. By this I mean they will be able to focus on their academics and not have to worry about food.
The time to act is now to strengthen our communities, and we have a unique opportunity to make these changes. The waffle makers will be used to make waffles for students who attend our Saturday Academy. The air fryer will also be used to make breakfast and is a great way to teach students about healthier cooking. These cooking tools are fast, safe and easy to use and will allow for us to provide hot food for students.
We cannot let this time pass without doing everything that is possible to ensure that we are fighting to support our families and giving them an extra hand when we can.
