Cooking in the Classroom: Life Skills for High School Students

My Project
Kitchen safety and cooking are essential adult skills that, when taught, becomes a means AND an end to learning and performing a myriad of life skills. I am an occupational therapist who supports autistic students in accessing their academic environment as well as learning life skills and community living skills that will support them in transitioning from high school to the world beyond. When learning how to cook, we work on a wide range of skills before we even enter a kitchen; for example, making a shopping list, navigating in the community to get to the grocery store, finding items in a store, communication skills, navigating through diverse sensory environments, and money management to name a few. The task of cooking further supports skills in planning, organization, sequencing, time management, safety awareness, and problem solving. The end result of feeling pride and satisfaction in making a meal or tasty treat is also an incredibly motivating avenue for learning important life skills and fostering positive mental health.
These kitchen tools and equipment will provide my students with the ability to practice a wide range of skills that would otherwise only be taught through discussion, which does not fully capture the rich learning opportunities that experience provides.
The durability of these products will allow for long-lasting use for many years to come, giving many more future students the opportunity to benefit.
