Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am one of three teachers who run an 18-21-year-old job transition program for students with disabilities. The students are generally intellectually disabled, autistic, and learning disabled. They all need assistance with life and independent living skills, some needing more assistance than others. A PPT team decides if the student is appropriate for the program. There are 30 students in the program with 3 teachers and 8 paraprofessionals. Some of the students have 2:1 support while others have general support.
One of the many aspects of the program is to give the students the skills and experiences that they can take with them when they graduate.
Many of the students have cooking goals written on their IEP's. To achieve these goals, we have a major roadblock as we do not have a kitchen that accommodates our students. Because cooking, shopping, and working in a kitchen are important aspects of life, we are struggling to give the students these opportunities on a regular basis.
My Project
Our focus in the job transition program is to get the young adults life experiences they can take with them when they leave. We provide job internships & training, volunteer activities, and community experiences as well as real-life skills. Getting the opportunity to plan and cook meals is one way these students can benefit and gain real-life experience.
We would have the Cooking Matters Community Health Network Foundation folks come and teach two cooking classes to the students.
This would include the nutritional aspects of the meal, planning of the meal, and cooking. It is two, 2-hour classes in which the culminating activity is eating the meals they have been working towards.
