My Students

"The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." -Dr. Seuss Reading creates a strong vocabulary, use of imagination, and exposure to real-life situations. Students who struggle with reading are often the ones who lack in these skills.

My students are anywhere from mildly hard-of-hearing to profoundly deaf.

They come from homes where communication is extremely limited, some having no communication at all. Most of them rely on the use of sign language and hearing aids. They attend a Regional Day School for the Deaf, which is the only one of its kind in our area. They are bused in from surrounding cities and some travel more than 45 miles each day. Coming from homes with no communication, they struggle with day-to-day vocabulary and experiences. Visual information is crucial to their full comprehension of any subject. Resources and materials for our classroom are slim, and we struggle to find resources that are at our reading level, but also engaging and interesting. This proves to be a difficult task, as my students are reading two or three grades below grade level, but who get bored easily with younger books. We are constantly battling between finding books that they can read, but are also books they'll enjoy.

My Project

My students yearn for interesting books that they can read and develop vivid pictures in their head, to play the book out like a movie, but our supply of books at their reading level relate to younger students. These materials will be a dependable source of books for our guided reading lessons. These lessons focus on one or two specific reading comprehension and fluency tasks that our students lack the most. These books will essentially be able to reach their level of reading and comprehension, while at the same time be engaging and fun to read. The visual material in these books is always beneficial, and the more exposure for differentiated texts and text features can only assist in the learning and development of my students. This project will benefit in guided reading and encourage my students to read, to use their imagination to create a vivid picture of their story, and will aid in vocabulary acquisition and development, as well as reading comprehension.

This project means a lot to my students, and also means a lot to me.

By donating to this project, you are impacting the lives of our Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students, who most of the time feel left out and unappreciated. My hope is to show our students that they can do anything they set their mind to, with hard work. Knowing that you donated your money to this cause will truly show them that they are important, and their learning is important as well. Help me change the lives of my students.
