Continuing Classroom Coral Culture

My Project

Aquarium study and aquaculture provide excellent applications of STEM concepts, financial literacy, teamwork, and responsibility. We have been propagating corals in our science classroom for several years to share, trade, and reduce the demand for collection from wild reefs. Students learn how aquaculture is part of the Blue Economy.

Before dividing live corals for propagation, students need to learn about their anatomical structure and function.

I have found that constructing an edible coral polyp model accompanied by sketching and labeling is a very effective way for students to understand and identify the structures. Licorice laces and jam take on the roles of tentacles and adhesive to bond the other parts onto the model. Students will use mini UV lights to observe the fluorescence of coral polyps, explore the electromagnetic spectrum, and try a new study of microplastics.

Manila folders are not exciting on their own, but are necessary for students to organize their learning. Notes, activities, sketches, and data logs of little plankton ecosystems students set up and sun data collected throughout the year need a home. Notebooks made from folders and fasteners are used every day in class and provide a strong foundation for all the disciplines involved in science and aquatic studies. Air plants will be added for students to see that plants do not all require soil, and spray bottles will mist them as well as our insect terrariums.

Lastly, it often seems as though the EM in STEM is for Experiments and Mess! Science classrooms and boxes of ocean need a variety of cleaning supplies like sponges, brushes, and citric acid to clean glassware, tables, aquarium tubing, saltwater mixing buckets, and propagation tools. We must keep things safe, clean, and avoid cross-contamination among science labs and aquarium systems to protect our investment in our growing corals.
