Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students enrolled in this middle school are bright, eager, and curious scholars with a desire for learning. Most of these students will be first-generation college students; they know and understand that education is the key to success.

Though these students live in a poverty-stricken community, their lives are filled with a wealth of resiliency, persistence, and determination.

These students deserve to have a library that is a safe, inviting, comfortable space where they can come to read, work independently, or in groups.

My Project

The stories in these books feature characters from diverse backgrounds and ethnicities. These characters are resilient and often face tough socio-cultural challenges and issues of identity, family, and belonging. Stories such as "Efren Divided" and "Not Your All American Girl" will allow students to read stories they can relate to as they navigate through the sometimes difficult period of adolescence.

Students must read stories written from diverse voices and perspectives to see a reflection of themselves.

When these stories are missing, our students miss out on an opportunity to grow as readers and critical thinkers. These stories will allow them to see and appreciate multi-dimensional characters that might remind them of their own lives and voices, which will help validate their own experiences as also worthy of belonging in a book.
