Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever eaten fruit or vegetables that you have picked from your garden? It is possible, no matter where we live, to grow our own fruits and vegetables utilizing ordinary containers.
95% of my students are classified as impoverished.
They are motivated, however, to improving the quality of their nutrition through gardening. Our school is a public elementary school, 85% Hispanic, 95% on free/reduced lunch. Although most live in a very rural setting, they do not have the land available to garden, and many don't even have the knowledge on how to begin growing and cultivating easy garden crops.
My Project
The students will undertake a container garden project. They will learn about nutrition, and the relative ease with with a container garden can be managed. The students will plant, and manage this garden at school. They will be able to partake of the fruit of their labors when their crop ripens and is harvested. The students have already begun learning about nutrition and the needed daily requirements to maintain a healthy body. This garden will help them to understand and take some responsibility for their own nutritional health.
With the funding of this project, the students will be able to immediately begin the planting process of their project.
Without containers, and the necessary supplies to sow the crop, the students cannot participate in the planting of a container garden.
