I serve a spirited group of students at my 6th-8th grade middle school as their school librarian. My students are funny, curious and very opinionated. They represent a range of neighborhoods and wards from across Washington D.C. Over 3/4 of the students served qualify for the federal free-lunch program.
My students are voracious readers who enjoy books that represent subjects where they can be entertained, learn and grow as individuals.
Since March of 2020, my students began using ebooks virtually as an alternative to print books.
The acquisition of these eBooks have helped greatly during the mandatory quarantine. Despite this, my students still desire print books and would like to add them to their personal libraries at home. My students desire to learn more about current social challenges that are taking place in our society and how they can contribute to help incite change.
Our 6th grade students are excited to return to school for a special in-person summer bridge program. Through my library they will be introduced to middle school leisure reading books for enjoyment. This grant will help fulfill this need.
I would like to provide free books for leisure reading that they will enjoy and keep that will be used during the summer program.
These books will be provided in a contactless environment and will be given to the students for them to keep. The books range in reading levels to ensure all students regardless of reading ability will have a great book to read.
