My Students
My students need to be able to scientifically determine the safety and efficacy of the personal and household consumer products available to them for purchase. The equipment and supplies proposed in this project will insure that they make an educated decision when shopping for consumer products.
High school chemistry is a prerequisite to enrollment in a four year college program.
I teach chemistry and honors chemistry to 10th, 11th, & 12th grade students who are enrolled in a high school located in a designated high-need, multicultural community.
I teach three sections of high school chemistry. Two of the sections are honors classes and the third is a standard chemistry class. The honors class consist of sophomore and junior high school students. The regular class consists mainly of juniors and seniors. The honors classes are challenged more in the curriculum. Interactive classroom activities are essential in all aspects of learning! Generally, chemistry attracts highly motivated students who for the most part are college bound.
My Project
My chemistry students can learn the different hands-on techniques for testing and evaluating consumer products such as toothpastes, antacids, shampoos, household cleaners, etc. by utilizing the laboratory equipment and procedures provided by the kits requested within the scope of this project. Classroom instruction utilizing textbook and other resources needs to be augmented by practical laboratory exercise to reinforce instruction. The physical exercises provided herein will allow students to physically test the safety and efficacy of the consumer products they purchase.
Nothing is more important in science classroom instruction than hands-on laboratory experience reinforcing the content being presented!
Actual laboratory experimentation by my students evaluating their own choice of personal and household consumer products with the supplies requested in this scientific project is nothing short of the best guarantee for optimum learning and content retention!
