My Students

Do you remember what it was like to be playing on the playground during recess at school? Those are some of our most favorite memories of school. This is what I would like for our transitional kindergarten students!

My transitional kindergarten students are young kindergarteners.

These children are being given the gift of time. They are the children who are born after September 1, 2006 and before December 1, 2006 and also the students outside this birthday range who need extra time to transition into school life with better success. Our school is located in a low-income, high poverty area that is predominantly Spanish-speaking. Most of my class does not speak English but they are so willing to learn! Gang violence has also been on the rise in the last year and it has hit too close to home. In February 2011 some of our students witnessed a shooting just across the street from the playground. On top of that, there is major health issues with the oil refineries nearby. Even amidst the poverty, health concerns and lack of safety in our area my transitional kinder students are so excited to be discovering new things and learning new ideas. They are seeing that learning can be fun!

My Project

Did you play in a grassy field or a big tar lot? Our urban school is a big unexciting tar lot with a very tiny patch of grass. In the kindergarten area, there is not a lot of space and absolutely no grass for the children to relax or run in. This setup does not induce them to be physically active. With obesity on the rise in our nation's children it is so important that my students have a variety of ways to be physically active when they are outside. My students need outdoor play equipment such as a basketball hoop, balls and beanbags, and a ring toss game. I've chosen products that not only encourage them to move but encourage them to exercise their brain function by counting and reading letters.

I believe that children can develop a desire to stay physically active throughout their lives when they are given opportunities early in life to develop large and fine motor skills in a non-stressful environment.

Our school is one of the only safe areas our students can play in their neighborhood. Please help them develop this lifelong healthy habit!
