Many of our students were born right here in Buffalo, like their parents. But, the majority of our students are learning English as a second language, which includes many refugee families. Our students come from various countries; such as Burma, Thailand, The Congo, Afghanistan, and Somalia just to name a few. Their families often come to the United States with nothing, and have a difficult time preparing for the school year because of language barriers, and lack of resources. Our students have such diverse backgrounds and home life, and come together to share the same school environment every day.
They are an energetic group who learn best by doing, experiencing, and being involved!
Our students have such diverse backgrounds and home life, and come together to share the same school environment every day. We do our best to provide everything they need, because every child deserves the chance to succeed.
My Project
Recently, more and more classrooms are turning to a flexible seating model. Switching from traditional desks and chairs to more comfortable shared learning spaces. Research is now showing that students who experience flexible seating options in the classroom, show more improvement in their learning. Flexible seating creates a comfortable, community atmosphere, where students can gain choice and ownership in their learning and get rid of anxieties they have about school.
They are not just visitors being taught, they are shareholders in the class's goal of learning.
Giving them options creates a sense of control and empowerment over their learning, and provides a sense of ownership in the classroom space. Having shared space also creates a community for learning in the classroom where students are more likely to work together and problem solve as a team.
When the students' only focus becomes what is being taught, (and not how uncomfortable they are, or where they are in the room), they can comprehend more deeply and retain a greater amount of information. Second graders need to move. They have so much energy and an environment that fosters that, will allow students to become more alert and focused during the lessons.
