Conquering Anxiety and Regulating Emotions through Play/Art Therapy
Help me give my students a dollhouse and art supplies so that they can express emotions appropriately and conquer their anxiety/regulate emotions during counseling.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Let's face it, living in New York city can be stressful and cause high levels of anxiety due to work demands, family obligations, expensive food and rent. As adults we may be able to calm our worries with self-care, talking to a friend, or a therapist but it's different for children. Before children learn self-regulation, and techniques to handle anxiety, they need to learn how to communicate their feelings. This is easier said than done when young children have trust issues, a broken home, or lack social skills to make a friend or ask for help.
Through play therapy with board games and a beautiful dollhouse, our students would be able to express themselves in a safe environment and learn how to handle life situations through role playing while also using their imagination (grades K-2).
Children learn better when they are having fun. I find that with our older students (grades 3-5) art therapy is their preferred mode of expression. Students that are unable to find their words to express difficult feelings and emotions have an outlet through drawing, coloring, and creating (paper fidgets, origami, journaling). After they are able to sort their feelings and reign in their emotions a check-in with me is much more productive. Art paper, crayons and glue are very popular in my office and finish quickly. Students know they can count on me when they need a break and can sit and draw or take art paper and crayons to lunch. I fund all of their art supplies and it adds up and this year I thought that maybe someone out there would be able to relate to our students and give us a helping hand by donating.
