This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am excited to start the new school year with my new 5th grade through 8th-grade classes. However, since I am new to the school, that means I am starting new with resources. The pandemic has created an environment where learning will be fully virtual this year. I have to get creative introducing myself and building relationships with the 400 students in the school community. All of my young scholars are considered low-income and qualify for free and reduced lunch. The pandemic has not made this challenge easier. But, as we all know, children are resilient!
My Project
Connecting with my students is important, even more now that we are virtual due to the health crisis around them. However, due to the financial constraints of an urban district that serves students and communities, many below the poverty line, the technology I am using to connect with my students is almost a decade old.
Virtual meetings through a dark computer screen of an outdated system are the only times I have to connect to my students and family.
Families do not get to see and hear the message I have as clearly and powerfully as I intend. The MacBook I am requesting will allow me to connect to the internet more reliably with less "freezing" in virtual meetings. Pairing the MacBook with the AirPods provides another sense of connection, so I am not screaming through at the families after they have "virtually" allowed me in their homes. Up to date technology is no longer optional during 100% distance learning if we want our minority students to have equitable opportunities to succeed and achieve.
