Connecting with Students Remotely

I need a Fifine studio condenser and ring light to make high quality teaching videos and demonstrations to provide my students with a better learning experience while at home.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Philyaw's classroom raised $430

This project is fully funded

My Students

I serve all students, Kindergarten-twelfth grade, enrolled in Caldwell County Schools. As the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Director for Caldwell County Schools it is my job to develop and write curriculum for all teachers within our school district. I also teach the curriculum I develop to a variety of students scattered across the county. My students are curious, imaginative, and creative with a mind-set ready to learn! They range in socioeconomic status, some come from low-income households while others are from upper-middle class.

No matter their socio-economic standing I have found that the coronavirus has no boundaries when it comes to learning and affects everyone.

During the transition to online learning, technology is a crucial aspect of planning, teaching, and delivery of instruction. With the uncertainty of what the school year holds, I want to make sure I have the equipment necessary to reach all of my students and assist teachers in learning new digital platforms for instruction.

The students within my district come from a variety of ethnic backgrounds including Hispanic, African American, Eastern European, and Asian. Of those students, sixty-five percent qualify for free and reduced lunch because of their parents socioeconomic standing.

My Project

Students have transitioned from a face to face learning experience to an at-home digital world. They now receive instruction through a computer where lessons are housed in a learning management system. The face to face contact they experience is digital occurring in the form of a Zoom meeting. Many times students are left to review recorded class content daily once the zoom session ends. I want to make the content that I upload into the learning management system highly engaged with good quality sound and clear images.

The materials provided through this project are designed to support students during remote learning but will easily transfer into future classroom instruction.

Whether I am teaching at school in a hybrid setting or teaching remotely I will be able to use these technology tools to enhance my instruction. The ring light will provide better lighting while I am teaching, bringing my teaching visuals used into focus with a clear and crisp image. The Fifine studio condenser with a microphone will eliminate background noise as I instruct students on the lesson of the day. The Rocketbook materials will allow me to transform any surface into a whiteboard. Finally, the microscope camera will allow my students a glimpse of the inner workings of cells by viewing slides and specimens through the digital realm of my computer since they will not have access to a microscope at home.

During remote learning I have realized how important it is to engage students both online and face to face. In order for students to fully conceptualize what is being taught they need hands-on learning. While I have utilized online programs and apps, many students have still struggled to connect in this digital environment. These materials will help bridge that gap.
