My students need 12 headsets with microphones in order to connect to other students around the world by creating voice threads to be posted on a classroom blog.
Have you ever watched or listened to a home video where the background noise affected what was really going on? Creating voicethreads from open microphones creates a similar problem. This year, my 6th grade students will be introduced to voicethreads and I want them to have a wonderful experience!
I teach 6th grade World Geography in Missouri.
My students begin 6th grade in our town's middle school which is a new experience for them since they are coming from an elementary school. A middle school is different from a junior high school because it strives to teach students according to their developmental stage. Instead of putting them in a new building and saying, "Here you go, here's your freedom! Have fun!" We strive to help them experience freedom gradually, supporting them intellectually, emotionally, and socially.
My Project
The 12 microphone headsets I am requesting will enable my students to connect to students all around the world by creating voicethreads. Voicethreads are recordings, much like mp3's that allow students to post on the Internet. I have set up a classroom blog that students will be using this year and one of the projects I have planned for the students to complete is posting a voicethread. Our school doesn't have enough microphone headsets for my students to use so it would make completing this project very difficult. Such a project will help students to practice their speech, writing, and their understanding of the world. Most of my students have never left Missouri and this would be a great chance for them to experience the world beyond our state.
As I've mentioned, many of my students have never experienced the world beyond Missouri.
As a World Geography teacher I struggle to help these students understand the world beyond. Giving my students projects such as a voicethread allows them to experience the world, not just our state. The project is set up for them to respond to another student's posting not from our country. With this experience, my students will actually be able to connect with and hopefully experience the world beyond.
