My Students
Teaching in a Title I school has its many challenges. One of those challenges is getting parents and caregivers involved in the academic lives of their students. My book club will help accomplish this goal.
My school's population is 15% special needs, 15% of have a language other than English as their first, and 75% of our students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.
Our students come from all walks of life, and face many challenges socioeconomically that often cause them difficulty in the academic setting as well. My school is a public, suburban high school to which students are bused from all over the expansive Metro area.
My Project
Despite the disadvantages many of my students face, I have begun to create a culture of readers by providing students the opportunities to read in every class, everyday. I would like to take that a step further by involving the parents and caregivers in this endeavor by providing them books to read along with their students, and by inviting them into book discussions at school or in the community with others who have also read the same books. As a result, I hope to bring students closer to their families, but also to help both students and parents see points of view outside their own through literature. This will not only prepare students for college-level courses on literature, but will encourage tolerance among the members of the community.
This project is so important because my students rarely get a chance to connect academics with their communities and personal lives.
If I provide the materials to read, facilitate the discussions, and maintain a close-knit reading group among my students and their parents, this could make a huge positive impact on the culture of our school, and even in the community.
