Connecting School & Home Through Discover Science Bags
My students need a variety of fiction and nonfiction books to encourage more reading at home, and tote bags.

My Students
Books open doors to an exciting, new world! But what if you didn't have any books to read at home? Would you even read at all? Unfortunately, this is the problem for many of my students. They do not have access to a variety of books to read at home, so they are not reading.
My second graders attend a Title I combination school in a rural community located in the Florida Panhandle.
There are less than 450 total students in grades Pre-K through 12. Roughly 70% of the elementary population qualifies for free & reduced lunch.
Over the past few years, I have noticed a steady decline in the amount of reading that my students are doing at home. One reason for this is because my students do not have enough books to read at home. Because my students are eager to read and to learn, I know that if they had more books to take home to share with their families, they would indeed read more! As their teacher, I want to do everything I can to instill a love of reading in each of my young students. This starts with getting enough books into their little hands.
My Project
With the requested supplies for this project, I plan to create "Discover Science Take-home Bags" that will strengthen the home/school connection and get books into the hands of my young readers. By taking the bags home, my students will be able to share the love of reading with their families and increase the amount of time they are reading at home. Better yet, these "Discover Science Take-home Bags" will connect science with literacy because all of the requested books are directly related to a science topic that we will study in second grade! With these bags, my students will not only have the opportunity to share the joy of reading with their families, but they will also strengthen their science skills at the same time! I know these bags will enhance their learning on so many different levels!
In order for impoverished students to be able to compete with their peers in the 21st century, they must have equal access to the necessary supplies and materials.
Creating these "Discover Science Take-home Bags" will not only encourage more reading at home, but they will also enhance learning of science as well. Most importantly, these bags will bring my students and their families closer together. With the connection of home and school, the possibilities for learning are endless!
