Connecting Mental Health and Sports to Boost Self-Regulation

Help me give my students supports for their mental health as well as sports equipment to aid their sensory self-management.

My Project

My students are 15-21 year old young adults with autism, cognitive disabilities, and/or behavioral needs who need learning opportunities to nurture both their minds and bodies to help them build important skills in emotional self-regulation and social interaction. My students love playing sports with one another and truly shine their abilities and enthusiasm!

We need adaptive sports equipment and mental health supports to connect mental health and physical activity to boost self-regulation by encouraging focus, reducing anxiety, and incorporating calming strategies essential for their success both in and outside the classroom.

The mental health supports calming sensory tools, mindfulness resources, and social-emotional learning books and visuals will help students practice self-management in a safe and engaging way. Adaptive sports equipment such as bocce ball sets, badminton gear, footballs, and indoor basketball hoops will provide structured physical activity that supports regulation through movement. Physical exercise enhances attention, emotional control, confidence, and teamwork skills critical to their overall development.

Additionally, reducing sensory overload in the classroom environment with calming corner materials like fluorescent light covers creates a supportive learning environment that fosters concentration and comfort, allowing students to engage fully in classroom activities. My students who have autism, cognitive and/or behavioral challenges need a comfortable and safe space that supports their emotional regulation, focus, and engagement throughout the school day.
