My students need fifty read aloud books to introduce new math ideas and help students visualize important math concepts, while also making a connection to math and literacy.
A typical day in our classroom starts with a delicious breakfast provided by our wonderful school kitchen. Our school district is one hundred percent free breakfast and lunch to all students because we understand that hungry minds need full bellies. Our school is a wonderful community of diverse families who support each other.
My students are kind, responsible and respectful.
They uphold these titles with pride and can be seen daily, trying to make our school and classroom a better place. We provide a nurturing environment that creates good citizens, independent thinkers and lifelong learners. We are a lively group of students who are eager to learn new things with innovative tools.
My Project
This project would allow my classroom to have a good selection of excellent, math read alouds in the classroom. These fifty text selections would allow my students to grasp new math concepts more easily and would provide a firm foundation in basic number sense. By helping students to better visualize the numbers and concepts upon which math is based, these great math read alouds could make a tangible difference in their math skills later on in their educational careers.
Providing great math read alouds will help my students visualize numbers and math concepts in a fun way that will engage them in a love of learning and of math for life.
There is so much to learn in kindergarten. These books will help introduce all math standards that are expected of our earliest learners. For example, "Animals on Boards, Domino Addion, Plus Sign, and What's New at the Zoo all address addition word problems. Elmer, The Great Graph Contest, and What Pet Should I Get?" all introduce students to the concept of graphing data. Each book has been chosen to cover topics of time, graphing data, subtraction, addition, comparing numbers to twenty, numbers to one hundred, shapes, measurement, sorting and number writing. These books would be a game changer for teaching these concepts to my students.
