Connecting Math, Literature, and Life Skills with Baking Experiences!

Help me give my students valuable experiences with baking that will bring their learning to life as well as instill important life skills!

My Project

I serve children who live in a very rural area, many in poverty situations. For some, school is their safe place. I would like to give them positive experiences within that safe place that can also develop important life skills they can hopefully take with them outside the classroom.

I am requesting a convection oven and cooking equipment so that we can experience cooking/baking in our classroom.

This is a wonderful way to integrate math skills, such as measurement and fractions with science standards, such as chemical changes, social emotional skills like cooperation, the functional reading skills required in recipes, and even literature.

We would use these materials for experiences such as baking gingerbread cookies at Christmas after reading "The Gingerbread Baby", by Jan Brett. We bake "thunder cake" after reading the story with the same name by Patricia Polacco. We could discover how yeast works in baking bread and celebrate reading and/or math achievements with treats such as making s'mores or mini pizzas.

Having these items in my classroom would make the logistics of baking easier. Rather than having to coordinate with our lunchroom, we would be able to plan these experiences whenever we wanted. Students would also get to see the process of baking from start to finish.
