My Students
My students are all very different. Star Wars, football, baseball, dance, tennis, and gymnastics are a few of the things that fuel our discussions and help us relate our learning to real life. Many of my students are away from their homes because of circumstances out of their control. Some may never know another home besides the local orphanage they currently live in. The best thing about my students is that no matter what happens, they make the best of any situation due to their resilience. So instead of complaining about having to attend school, they are eager to learn and better themselves. Our school is a Title I school with a high poverty rating. Unlike some schools, our district does not have an abundance of income to be able to provide every student and school with items to help encourage growth.
My Project
My students have always been engaged readers. They all have their favorite series of books. Many of them lose that love of learning when math is mentioned. They see it more as a process of hard steps than solving a problem in a story. With my materials, I will be able to engage them in a story problem while helping them activate the inner mathematician to solve mathematical problems. These books bring math to life for children. I want to break the cycle of you can only be a good student in reading or in math. I want them to learn that they can be awesome students by using knowledge from both subjects to learn!
