My Project
My students consist of preschoolers with special needs, many of whom are minimally-speaking or non-speaking. They demonstrate the desire to communicate, however have difficulty doing so verbally. Currently in speech sessions, we use a low-tech core vocabulary board along with printed visuals, however the use of an iPad as a communication device would significantly enhance the ability of my students to develop their voice and express themselves.
With a variety of specialized apps designed for augmentative and alternative communication (AAC), the iPad would provide a platform for my students to communicate their thoughts, needs, and feelings effectively.
Visual aids, speech output, and interactive features would empower my students to engage in conversations, participate in classroom activities, and foster connection with their peers and teachers.
As they gain confidence in using this technology, they will not only be able to express their individuality but also develop critical language and social skills, fostering a sense of belonging and enhancing their overall development. By integrating the iPad as a communication app during our speech sessions, I can create an increasingly inclusive space where each of my students has the opportunity to find and amplify their unique voice.
