This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Perhaps you recall having a pen pal as a child. You likely enjoyed receiving letters from your pen pal learning about his/her life. With the help of current technologies I hope to give my students a 21st century version of this experience.

My students come from a low socio-economic neighborhood located in the southwest United States.

Our demographics include approximately 95% Hispanic, 2% Caucasian, 2% African American, and 1% other ethnicities. Students are limited to the learning experiences provided by our school. As a result, I am constantly striving to create experiences that will motivate and engage students to become life-long learners.

My Project

In order to prepare students for a successful life in the 21st century, educators must provide standards-based, problem solving opportunities which engage students through the use of technology. This project accomplishes that by addressing and integrating content from a variety of core subjects. Students will create interactive tours that will be shared with their pen pals using Google Maps to share information about a particular location. Students will also connect with digital pen pals all over the world via Skype. The microphone-headsets and webcams that I have requested will enable students to connect with their pen pals in real-time. Students will also have an opportunity to chat with their pen pal about life in their town. This will enable students to identify similarities and differences between people from different countries/locations. This project promotes both academic achievement and global citizenship.

It has the potential to open student's minds to new places and cultures preparing them to interact in ways that will prepare them for life in a global economy.
