Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students come from across Latin America—Cuba, Venezuela, Colombia, Nicaragua, and beyond. They bring with them rich cultures, personal stories, and a desire to succeed. Many are recent arrivals to the U.S., facing language barriers while striving to master academic Spanish and prepare for the AP Spanish Language and Culture exam.
In our classroom, we focus on building confidence in speaking and listening.
However, we lack the essential tools that make this possible—headphones with microphones. With this equipment, students will be able to record themselves speaking, practice pronunciation, and engage in listening activities without distractions. This is especially critical when preparing for the speaking portions of the AP exam, which require clear articulation and comprehension.
More importantly, these tools will allow students to share their voices—literally. They will be able to tell their stories, interview family members in Spanish, and connect with students from other parts of the Spanish-speaking world through virtual exchanges.
I teach in a public high school in Miami, where over 90% of my students are Hispanic, many of them English Language Learners. Some have been in the U.S. for just a few months, while others are fully bilingual. They are driven, compassionate, and eager to use their bilingual skills to bridge communities.
