Connecting Common Core Maths to Kids With Special Needs

My Students

I say "twenty" and students write "12;"for "fifteen plus thirteen" they may write any combination of signs and digits. It's hard to learn math when you have a learning disability!

My students struggle with math, reading, writing, and behavior because they each have at least one disability.

This year, I have more children than ever coming for help with basic math. Our urban school serves children from all walks of life and my classroom is visited by students from regular, behavior, and designed instruction classrooms. We are busy!

My Project

We got a sample copy of part of this curriculum and love it! The repetition, highly-structured lesson and skill development, combination of oral, visual, and written maths are having a huge impact on learning. The frequent mastery tests help us ascertain whether children are learning. They ARE! Right now, I am teaching this level 3 times a day to kids in 2nd through 4th grade, with more coming every month. We NEED the rest of the set!

Developing an understanding of place value, basic facts, basic skills, and practicing until firm is the only way to teach math.

This material provides such a solid foundation. Parents are happy, students come willingly and work hard, and I feel successful as a teacher. I'm so worried I won't be able to continue this marvelous program which is having such a positive impact on learning.
