Do you know what it is like to have to travel 45 minutes to get to the nearest city? That is what the reality for our students. My students want to move beyond reading about the world around them; they want to experience it!
My students live in a high poverty, rural area in Northeast PA.
Our district consists mostly of farmland, because of this my students have a limited view of the world. This become challenging when trying to connect their past experiences to create new knowledge of Scientific concepts. We have an increasing population of ESL (English as a Second Language) students.
My students are inquisitive and hard working. My students need help and to be given the tools to become proficient 21st Century learners. This includes them becoming more proficient working with technology, building creativity and innovation, thinking critically and problem solving, and effectively communicating and collaborating with their peers in the class and with an audience outside of our class. They also need to build information and media literacy. These are all vital life and career skills.
My Project
Our students spend the year using the Scientific Method to gain understanding of Earth's history. They do this by understanding and examining types of rocks, rock formations, and natural phenomena. They also learn about the Weather and Water systems here on Earth. They explore molecules in different forms of matter, the layers of the atmosphere, heat transfer, and how and why the seasons and weather occur. My students will be able to use the Chromebooks to bring these concepts to life. They will also be able to creatively demonstrate and communicate their understanding of these concepts using Web 2.0 tools.
As a Science teacher, my goal is connect them with the world beyond the boundaries of this district and get a world view of scientific concepts that we are reviewing.
It is very hard because we do not live near any places of resource like museums. I want to inspire my students to be independent thinkers and life-long learners. The Chromebooks will allow me to do this by providing real-world, up-to-date sources in an individualize environment.
