My Students
My students are creative problem solvers and enthusiastic learners. They live and learn in a New York City Pre-Kindergarten to 5th grade school. They come from a diverse community with a wonderful variety of cultural backgrounds and languages (Chinese, Russian, Albanian, Italian, and Mandarin). More than half of the students come from low-income households, and many of them are part of military families. More than half of the students are English Language Learners. Many families endured Hurricane Sandy and are still recovering from the devastation that the storm left. They are hard-working and full of inspiration and an eagerness to create.
Art is a language we can all speak and working in a group creates a strong community.
They just need the tools to create.
My Project
My students have saved empty paper towel rolls all year. We practice recycling by reusing everyday objects that have outgrown their usefulness. Now we are ready to turn them into horse head masks. We need the drawing pencils to study horse anatomy, masking tape to connect our paper rolls, and art past to create the skin and form of our sculptures.
Creating a mask takes time thought and planing.
theses supplies will enable my students to do that as well as create. Each student sculpture is unique and they get to showcase their classroom learning as well as their unique style.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
