Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are hard working, thoughtful, creative kids with a passion for learning. They are amazing readers who relish our independent reading time each day.
While my students are well on their way to becoming successful readers, we are a Title I school and our local library is not accessible to all students.
In the journey to becoming lifelong readers, choice of books is key. Students need to be able to read books that appeal to them, and they need access all year long, not just during the school year.
My Project
As Stephen King once said, "Books are a uniquely portable magic." The idea behind the Little Free Library movement, of sharing great books with the surrounding community, is right in line with our mission as educators. We want our students reading; we want them to develop a love for books. Having a dedicated book box prominently displayed and available to all is a wonderful step in the journey to helping people, both kids and adults, to become life-long readers.
We want to make the magic of books accessible to our students and to our surrounding community by installing a Little Free Library in front of our school.
With a two-story lending library book box, a variety of books will be available to anyone who wants to borrow a book, 24 hours a day. If access to books is what is keeping someone from reading, then we can easily fix that with a book box!
We are a Title I school, and the county library is not easily accessible to all of the families in the surrounding neighborhoods. With the addition of a free lending library on our campus, we are hoping to help foster a love for reading by making a variety of books available. The addition of a book box, dedicated solely to sharing great books, has the potential to bring our community closer and turn innumerable kids and adults into avid readers. It is our school's 60th birthday this year; what better present than the gift of reading?
