My Project

My students come from diverse backgrounds, often facing challenges such as poverty, limited access to green spaces, and the ongoing impacts of COVID-19. They are resilient and eager to connect with hands-on learning experiences.

The pandemic has left many feeling isolated, and this project aims to help them regain a sense of purpose and connection to the ʻāina (land) and each other.

We aim to create a "farm-to-table" experience, bringing students closer to the ʻāina and teaching them the journey of food from seed to plate. With irrigation supplies, vegetable seeds, and an oven, we will establish a school garden where students can grow and cook fresh produce.

Students will cultivate culturally significant crops like kalo (taro) and ʻuala (sweet potato), learning sustainable agriculture, traditional Hawaiian practices, and nutrition. They will also gain cooking skills, transforming their harvest into healthy meals to share, fostering pride, teamwork, and a deep connection to the ʻāina.

This project will provide a collaborative environment to combat the isolation and stress from COVID-19, promoting mental well-being. Tending the garden and cooking will help students develop responsibility, teamwork, and appreciation for the ʻāina.

Your support will help my students grow—literally and figuratively—in developing life skills that will empower them for years to come.
