This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"The educator must believe in the potential power of his pupil, and he must employ all his art in seeking to bring his pupil to experience this power." -Alfred Adler
It is my team's goal, as special education professionals, to foster an environment that helps our students make connections between what they learn in school and their lives to prepare them for young adulthood, integrating into work-ready programs and beyond.
I teach 9th through 12th grade students in a Multiple Disabilities moderate/severe program. It is important for all students to tie real-life experience to school matter, but for students with disabilities, it is one of the most effective ways to engage them and help them remember what they learn in school.
Our students are impacted by the countless factors that plague urban communities where positive and wholesome experiences are hard to come by. I prepare lessons to help them make real-life connections to our context-rich alternate curriculum unit topics, health, science, and art lessons but it can be a challenge to support such diverse learners. Still, we push on because we enjoy watching their sense of accomplishment when they are successful.
My Project
We are excited to start the new year online! We are in a self-contained classroom setting serving students with Multiple Disabilities. Hands-on is the name of our game, but that can be challenging with distance learning.
Students of all abilities enjoy using technology, but benefit from using familiar learning tools to help them make connections.
I would like to welcome students and the new students joining our class with a supplies box that will not only support their learning via technology, but also with hands-on activities.
The supplies listed in this project help me to create colorful and engaging activities such as our attendance "Check-in" Picture cards, monthly unit readers, ten-frames, vocabulary journals, recipe cards, and sequencing activities. To assist in accessing their devices, I will also create stylus pencils with adaptive foam grips. Wrapped up and housed in a sturdy box, these materials will surely motivate both parents and students for a rewarding online learning experience.
