This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My exceptional students are on a wide range of the Autism spectrum and intellectually disabled. They are always eager to come to school and learn on a daily basis. They depend so much on visual and hands-on activities that they can manipulate during a lesson. Also, they are always wanting to stay involved on campus and help others in need. The majority of my students come from low-income families who struggle to make ends meet and provide time at home to enhance their learning.

My Project

The materials requested in this project will give special needs students at our elementary an opportunity to get an unrestrained, non-threatening space where they can explore at their leisure. This freedom lets us see what calms them, what rouses them, and what they like or don’t. Special needs students will benefit greatly from the requested resources. The incline foam ramp will be used for students who like the soft sensations on their feet. The floor mats allow students to lay down and feel the softness of the foam which is relaxing to them. The swing gives them a rocking sensation that will soothe them and make them feel comfortable. Lastly, the trampoline will help students release energy built throughout the day. Giving students these sensory stimulations will encourage students to engage and explore the environment, which can have positive effects on their ability to react and interact with the larger world around them. They will feel ready to continue their day of learning. Additionally, a sensory room helps improve balance, movement, and spatial orientation, and helps develop students' visual processing abilities as well as their fine and gross motor skills, facilitating day-to-day living. Finally, a sensory room can help with frustrations that students may have throughout the day. They can use the tent and rocking chair to calm those urges and make them feel safe and sound.
