Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are a full spectrum with a diverse campus in race, culture, socioeconomic status and interests. Our campus serves approximately 635 students, grades 7th through 8th, and between the ages of 12 to 14. Ethnically, our students are approximately 87% minorities, with 45% being Latin American, 26% African American, and 13% Asian and Pacific Islander. Twenty-five percent of our students are currently English Language Learners. At BHMS, we have 10% of our population receiving services from our special education department. We have students coming from all over the district, including many who are also English language learners. Our students come from a variety of cultures and socioeconomic levels, which means that most students have limited access to technology at home. Many of my students are working hard learning how to take care of their health and well being.
We are working on creating a safe learning environment for our students.
We are in the process of getting equipment, and learning resources for our students.
My Project
Our school does not a gym or field, making it difficult for our school sport teams to get conditioning. Currently, sometimes the teams have to run around the corner of a public street to get their conditioning in. Having a Bowflex Max Trainer M3 elliptical on school campus will allow our students to train and train safely. We have over six sport teams that represent BHMS and each team will benefit from this equipment. BHMS has a coed flag football team, coed volleyball team, boys basketball team, girls basketball team, coed softball team, and both boys and girls soccer teams. We can develop fitness and conditioning programs to help our sports team members. The elliptical will help our teams as they compete against other schools, who many times have an advantage over us due to better conditioning equipment.
Our BHMS sports teams represent us proudly, now it is time for us to represent for them with needed cardio equipment.
The elliptical will make the students feel appreciated for their efforts while helping them prepare for their seasons. What we may lack in a gym or a field we can make up by having much needed equipment for them. Many of our students are developing an interest in cardio fitness as they learn the importance of health while staying active. It is our goal to have all BHMS students develop and keep an interest in their long term fitness goals. Other schools that we compete against have the equipment we just do not have, putting us at a disadvantage during the sport seasons. All the BHMS sports teams will benefit from the equipment.
Our sport teams need to feel as though they are being supported, as they bring much pride and enjoyment to our school
