Help me give my students a sense of belonging to something Larger than Oneself. The Garden Club will help develop a student’s awareness Self and the World.
My 7th grade students were inspired by Tupac Shakur’s “The Rose That Grew From Concrete” to create a gardening club. In addition, students were inspired to create a name that addresses the laws of nature. Interestingly, the story of a rose growing up from a crack in concrete strengthened a student’s purpose to strive for greatness, despite adverse circumstances.
Currently, “Concrete Roses of Harlem” is a Gardening Club at Sojourner Truth P.S.M.S 149.
Located in Harlem, New York City P.S.M.S 149 shares a building with three other schools. The Sojourner Truth’s student population is made up of 49% female students and 51% male students. The Sojourner Truth school enrolls 92% economically disadvantaged students. Many of the students have never seen seeds sprouts or vegetables develop. For some, eating or seeing fresh vegetables is rare.
Through a garden club, students will be committed to achieving self-understanding, interpersonal skills, and cooperative skills. Having access to a gardening club would be a vital resource that would benefit students at every stage of their lives and not just in the classroom. The goal of this project is to encourage teamwork, individual responsibility and a commitment to success. In addition, the goal of this project will help students build a community that respects “life.” Requesting flowering pots, soils, seeds and tools to maintain a gardening club will make a difference in students' learning. Please help my students learn first hand the connection between nature, their own food supply, pollinators and other creatures that their school garden ecosystem attracts and supports.
