Concrete Concepts: Sensory Based Learning Activities

My Students

My students are an exceptional group of Kindergarten, First and Second graders who receive learning support services indicated by their Individulized Education Program. Services include direct Reading and Math instruction, Behavioral Support, and Social Skills Instruction. They are serviced inside and outside of the general education classroom with and without their same aged peers.

Through multi-sensory instruction, I aim to provide my students with meaningful lessons and hands-on activities that influence their cognitive and behavioral development.

Unfortunately, funding shortages within our district make it difficult to purchase items necessary for students to visualize and manipulate materials that reinforce academic and social concepts.

My Project

My project requires concrete forms of Reading and Math materials for the struggling learner.

Since research indicates that students with a Specific Learning Disability benefit from Montessori methods and the Orton-Gillingham approach, my students need multi-sensory materials to supplement their learning experiences.

Hands-on materials such as Life Skills Dress Boards, Sand Paper Letters, Sand Paper Numbers, Geometric Math Manipulatives, Sorting Sets, Sand Boxes, and Word Building Manipulatives, will assist my student in reaching their individualized learning goals. These materials will be utilized by students with learning goals that reflect the identification of letters, the identification of numbers, phonological awareness, and numeration skills.
