Concentric Literature Circles

My students need a class set of "Trino's Choice" to supplement their existing work in study of narrative as well as read a story that approximates their personal journey.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

A student told me that the only books they have at home to read are books that his mother uses to cook. I decided at that moment that we needed novels to supplement our Narrative Unit.

My student body is 99% Latinos and Latinas.

The students sometimes come to school without simple materials such as pens and pencils. The students are eager to learn, but they are limited by their family's resources, so it becomes my responsibility to give the students access to outside reading. Moreover, funding has been repeatedly cut, so I have standard textbooks, but the students need more than an average classroom experience.

My Project

The novel will allow me to improve the students' ability to read and write and to create a more capable and curious reader. The reading will invariably lead to better writing. The students may lack the motivation to read without my help to spur them into an activity where their input and their personal story has a place in their reading. Several colleagues and Literacy Coaches have shared that Literature Circles improve interest and skill for students and wish they had the opportunity to host their circles. The novel will help me begin strategies the students will use later on their learning and help prevent frustration with more lengthy readings as they progress through to high school and beyond. The literature circle will provide a non-traditional, that is to say, non-lecture driven, student-organized method for self-improvement.

This novel will only be a beginning.

This year's students will not be the only students with access to these novels. Students of future years will also benefit from the use of the novels, as I am sure the practice of Literature Circles will continue. As the procedures for the Literature Circles are polished, the novel supplied will have an even deeper impact. I hope to change the community's perception of reading with the children teaching their parents the value of literature.
