This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what it was like to sit in a chair all day and focus on learning new concepts? My students have learning disabilities and find it difficult to attend to instruction for long periods of time. They need a quiet place to do classwork without distractions.

My students have learning disabilities and are easily distracted by their environment and peers.

They need a quiet place to go when experiencing sensory overload or frustration. They are expected to meet the same standards as their typical developing peers. This creates additional challenges, as they try to learn and retain concepts that are frequently above their ability level. My students need to have access to a quiet place with resources that support their needs.

My Project

A concentration station has all of the resources needed to help my students complete tasks in a quiet environment. It includes a ball chair, visual timer, weighted lap pad, concentration cd, slant board, and footrest. Using this station will help my students self regulate and learn to request a quiet place before meltdowns occur. Giving students a place to refocus will minimize distractions/ meltdowns and encourage students to complete tasks. They will gain more confidence in their ability to focus and complete assignments.

Students with disabilities need a quiet area with appropriate resources to take breaks when they experience sensory overload.

These areas offer a quiet place to continue working on tasks/assignments without distractions. Giving my students this choice minimizes classroom disruptions caused by meltdowns and other avoidance behaviors. It is important for them to understand that they can learn and complete class assignments when provided with the appropriate resources.
