My students need mentor texts for their listening enjoyment, vocabulary development, and comprehension growth.

My Students
I teach at a great rural school near the coast of South Carolina. Our school houses Pre-K through fifth grade with a student population of about 800 students. Although our elementary school is one of the biggest in our district, we have a family feeling to it that visitors notice when they walk through the front doors. We have a total of six kindergarten classes. With a school this big, our population is extremely diverse. We have very low economic families in our community, but these children are always eager to learn and ready to over come obstacles. I want to help my students who are just beginning their school careers go even further and really push themselves. Your donations will make that dream possible for my classroom.
My Project
I have been diligently researching ways to improve my reading instruction this year. I was looking for a quality program that placed an emphasis on comprehension skills. KinderLiteracy to the rescue! KinderLiteracy is a whole-group, reader's workshop program that navigates students through a variety of lessons for an entire week, using one main mentor text per week. The themes change each week to keep the students interested.
I have already purchased the actual program, and I really love what I see.
Close reads, phonemic awareness activities, writing lessons, crafts, skill checks, weekly poems with retell pieces, vocabulary cards, and practice sheets...all I need now is the main mentor texts for each week. These mentor texts include a variety of both fiction and non-fiction books to keep my students interested and learning all year.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
