I teach students with autism who have difficulties accessing the core curriculum, due to processing issues. My students especially struggle in the area of reading. They need extra help learning and remembering phonics sounds. They learn best using computer-based interactive reading programs. They have made lots of progress using these programs in the past and I would like to continue to use these programs to further their success because having limited reading abilities affects all areas of their academics, including mathematics.
My Project
My students participate in a supplemental reading program called Read 180 / System 44. This program is for students who struggle with learning and applying reading phonics that would help them with their reading skills. This program is computer-based, which makes it interactive, fun, and gives immediate feedback on an individual basis to the readers. With this program students are given examples of how to say sounds and then they repeat what they hear. Students like this program because of the high-interest videos and the activities they can complete to further enhance learning. With daily use, headphones take a lot of wear and tear so they need to be replaced constantly.
