Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Last year, the children in my Kindergarten classroom were intrigued by the 10-year-old computers in our classroom.

However, my students, none of whom had access to computers at home, were not able to use the computers to engage in learning. Since the computers are over 10 years old, the operating system is so dated that it does not even recognize safari as a browser and I was unable to download any software onto the computer. It was painful, each day, to see the looks of disappointment in the children's faces as I told them that the computers were still broken. It was amazing to me that they would continue to ask day after day, even though the answer was always the same.

I am writing this grant because of their determination and resilience. This year, I would like to be able to tell my students that we have a wonderful computer for learning. With a new computer, my students could engage in literacy learning, use the computer-based math curriculum that accompanies the program that my school uses, and learn the basic computer skills that will help them thrive and become computer literate adults.

The children I teach are bright, engaging and wonderfully curious. However, my students' families have little to no resources for education at home. Most of the families of the students whom I teach cannot even afford to buy books for their homes. With the exception of one child, all of the students in my class last year qualified for free lunch. Your support would offer my students opportunities that they would otherwise not be able to have. Your help would allow my students to develop computer literacy skills and provide them with support in learning to read, write, and become young mathematicians!
